The Secret Millionaire: Albert Bertini - Thu 08 Oct 09:30 PM
Albert Bertini created and runs Trivest, a property development company with holdings worth $400 million. He has chosen to leave behind his family, his work and a luxurious lifestyle of cars, boats and beautiful properties to go undercover and work with the disadvantaged and volunteers in the inner Melbourne locale of Fitzroy.
While this formerly working class suburb is undergoing major social and economic change, towering housing commission estates still dominate the skyline and the area is home to some of the most impoverished people in Australia. Albert volunteers at a local soup kitchen called St Mary’s where he prepares and cooks meals for the homeless. There he meets Anne, a reformed gambler who volunteers at St Mary’s and credits it with helping her to turn her life around.
He meets Marie who runs Riding for the Disabled, an organisation that teaches children and adults with disabilities to ride horses once a week. He also bonds with Kay, an intellectually impaired woman who shows him how some of the simplest pleasures in life provide the greatest joy.
And he spends time working at The Way, a shelter for homeless men who have slipped through the social services net. Before he heads home to his life and family, Albert wrestles with who to give his money to and how to make the biggest impact.
